Real side hustles to make money in 2024

My business started as a side hustle. I was unfulfilled by my job and turned to the internet as a means to satisfy this craving for creativity in my day-to-day life. And if I could monetize that desire, even better.

What I discovered is a world of opportunity to make money from home online using your creative skills and passion. This is not a get-rich-quick-scheme or a guide to make a passive income, but, if you are searching for a way to turn your passion into extra income, this is the guide for you.

Before diving into the best ways to make money from home, it’s important to acknowledge that not all side hustles are equal. Creating extra income online is completely possible, but there are some common scams or time-wasting ideas that I recommend avoiding.

Methods to Avoid

  1. Selling Courses: This can be a challenging side hustle option due to the saturated market and the need for significant upfront investment in course development and marketing. Beyond this, I recommend being wary of buying courses online that promise to help you make thousands of dollars in one month. There is a thriving social media system of creators making money by selling courses on how to make money by selling courses with no true skill or income in the area they claim to be an ‘expert’.
  2. Dropshipping: Though popular online, dropshipping can easily become a logistical nightmare. The ****reliance on third-party suppliers can result in compromised quality control and accountability, impacting the overall integrity of the business.
  3. Crypto Trading: The Crypto Market is inherently volatile which can lead to significant financial losses if not managed properly. It is a new and complex model which is easily misunderstood with a lack of regulatory oversight often leading to fraud, scams, and significant financial loss.

My rule of thumb is that if something looks too good to be true, it probably is.

The first step in starting a side hustle is to find the right option for you. There are seemingly more legitimate methods to make money from home every week, meaning it is easier than ever to turn your passion into profit. Here are my top 10 ways to create extra income online.

10 Real Ways to Make Money From Home

  1. Freelancing: Offer your skills as a freelance writer, graphic designer, web developer, or virtual assistant. Websites like Upwork, Freelancer, and Fiverr are great platforms to find freelance gigs and you can learn how to get your first order here.
  2. Online Tutoring: If you excel in a particular subject, consider tutoring students online. Platforms like interview.io for tech, Cafetalk for languages, and Udemy for courses connect tutors with students and help you to get paid.
  3. User-Generated Content: UGC refers to any form of content—such as images, videos, testimonials, reviews, or social media posts—that is created by users or consumers rather than brands or creators themselves. Create a UGC portfolio, join platforms like Brand Meets Creators, and pitch directly to brands. You don’t need a following to get started, just the ability to create high-quality content.
  4. Transcription: If you are fluent in English and excel grammatically, you can get paid to transcribe audio and video clips online. Websites like TransribeMe and Rev pay by the hour or minute respectively, although passing the application process can be tricky.
  5. Remote Customer Service: Many companies hire remote customer service representatives to handle inquiries and provide support to customers. Check out job boards like Indeed or FlexJobs for remote customer service opportunities.
  6. Selling Handmade Crafts: If you’re crafty or artistic, consider creating handmade crafts or artwork to sell on online marketplaces like Etsy. You’ll need to invest time in learning best SEO practices and online marketing to make sure your creations get noticed, but from handmade jewellery to 3D Printed home decor items, there’s a market for everything.
  7. Social Media Management: Offer your expertise in social media management to businesses looking to enhance their online presence. You can help create content, manage social media accounts, and engage with followers. Jobs are often listed on Indeed or LinkedIn or reach out to smaller creators directly. 8. Blogging or Vlogging: Monetising a blog or YouTube channel on a topic you’re passionate about is many people’s dream scenario. It takes a lot of work and on average over a year to start seeing results, however, if you’re willing to put in the work to be consistent, the results can be life-changing. 9. Micro-Influencing: If you love social media, TikTok, and Instagram, you might be surprised to know that it can pay to build even a small community. Micro-influencers have at least 1,000 followers and a high level of engagement within a specific niche.
  10. Remote Consulting or Coaching: For those with expertise in a particular field such as launching a start-up, publishing, or fitness. In 2024, it is easier than ever to set up an online presence and start coaching clients remotely. Market your services through social media and LinkedIn, and ask friends and family to spread the word that you’re open for business.

Once you’ve chosen a side hustle that appeals to your interests, time limitations, and particular skill set, it’s time to get started. Regardless of the side hustle itself, the first few steps to start making money from home are remarkably similar. Preparation is the key to setting yourself up for long-term and consistent success.

Take a look at the roadmap below:

How to Start a Side Hustle from Home

  1. Find Your Niche: Begin by identifying your skills, passions, and areas of expertise. Consider what you enjoy doing in your spare time and where your talents lie. This will help you choose a side hustle that aligns with your interests and strengths.
  2. Research Potential Opportunities: Once you have an idea of your skills and passions, research potential opportunities. Reach out to those already in the niche for advice, find success stories on blogs and YouTube, and dedicate as much time to preparation as possible.
  3. Create a Business Plan: Develop a business plan outlining your goals, target market, pricing strategy, and marketing plan. Consider how you will differentiate yourself from competitors and attract customers. You should be clear in the time and financial investment needed for overhead and start-up costs and set up a realistic timeline for when you will start to see returns. This should not be a get-rich-quick scheme but an intentional and prepared plan for authentic growth and an extra income stream.
  4. Set Up Your Workspace: Create a dedicated workspace in your home where you can focus on your side hustle without distractions. Make sure your workspace is comfortable, organized, and equipped with the tools and resources you need to be productive. Having a designated work area will help you separate your side hustle from your personal life and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
  5. Start Small and Scale Up: Finally, start small and gradually scale up your side hustle as you gain experience and confidence. Focus on delivering high-quality products or services to your clients and seek feedback to continually improve. As your side hustle grows, consider reinvesting profits into your business to fuel further expansion and success. Remember that building a successful side hustle takes time, patience, and dedication, so stay persistent and keep pushing forward towards your goals.

I was lucky enough to have my side hustle eventually turn into a full-time freelancing career over multiple years. It is not an easy transition to make, however, I am so grateful to my younger self for deciding to try and monetise my creative outlet. You can read more about my story here, From Screen to Page.
