Auckland prides itself on having some of the greatest coffee in the world. As the originator of the Flat White and Long Black (depending on who you ask), it’s safe to say that New Zealand takes their coffee seriously. Unsurprisingly, this has also led to some of the most carefully crafted, intentionally designed, and wondrously atmospheric cafes in the entire world.
I started writing my first book whilst living in Auckland and without this list of my favourite work-friendly cafes, I don’t know if I’d have the finished manuscript that I do today. Check out my post for Advice on How to Work from a Coffee Shop (and actually be productive).
I probably frequented over 100 different cafes when living in New Zealand, and so whittling this list down to the Top Five Coffee Shops for Working was quite the task. I ranked the cafes based on the following Remote Work criteria:
- High-quality and delicious coffee
- An atmosphere that both relaxes and inspires
- Comfortable work stations
- Welcoming staff that don’t mind you staying for hours
Auckland might have some of the greatest coffee shops in the world, but they also have a lot of trendy cafes that specialise in tight spaces and speciality brews. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes I’m in the mood to try a funky $12 drip coffee and be on my way, however, on the days when you need to set up and zone into work for 3+ hours, those spots don’t quite cut it.
This list of work-friendly cafes in Auckland is pre-vetted for space, taste, and vibes so you don’t need to waste hours scrolling Google Maps for interior images or table layouts!
Top Five Work-Friendly Cafes in Auckland
1. Sol’s Place
Location: Ponsonby
Known For: Neighbourhood atmosphere and laid-back vibe
Why I Love It: I’m starting with a truly special spot. Sol’s Place is my favourite cafe in all of New Zealand. There’s something particularly unique about the way entering Sol’s Place feels like coming home. The coffee is perfect, the food delicious, and there are even live musicians in the evenings. My favourite part of Sol’s Place is the back garden patio covered with maps, books, and benches. I could easily spend entire afternoons working quietly in this cafe. With its homey atmosphere, it might be difficult to take multiple meetings or phone calls, but for writing, reading, or quiet computer work, Sol’s Place is one of the best spots in the city.
Address: 121 Ponsonby Road, Ponsonby, Auckland 1011
2. iPress
Location: Mount Eden
Known For: Baked goods, brunch, and friendly service
Why I Love It: iPress is a local favourite for a reason. The interior has so much character, and there is an almost constant flow of happy cafe-goers creating the perfect backdrop for a productive day of work. iPress has a great amount of seating including an upstairs with a nice view of the street meaning you won’t be racing to find the right spot. The food is bright and delicious so arriving in time for lunch or an afternoon snack is an absolute must!
Address: 421-425 Mount Eden Road, Mount Eden, Auckland 1024
3. Rumours Coffee
Location: CBD
Known For: Unparalleled coffee experience
Why I Love It: If you’re looking for something a little more minimalistic, Rumours Coffee is a must-try spot. Their barristers are next to none in their knowledge and skills, serving amazing drinks every single time. Although they are a little low on seating options, if you don’t mind being stationed at the bar, working from Rumours Coffee can be a superb treat. The atmosphere is creative but calm, making productivity flow easily, without pressure from the staff to pack up or hear out. Based in the CBD, Rumours Coffee is a quiet oasis when you need to get away from the traffic and get down to business.
Address: 19 O’Connell Street, Auckland CBD, Auckland 1010
4. Long Shot
Location: Ponsonby
Known For: Day to night transformation
Why I Love It: Long Shot is the daytime counterpart to the better-known bar and bistro Longroom. Many know this spot for evening drinks and dancing, but by day it becomes a super spacious cafe that offers a great menu and, even better, an incredibly comfortable working space for the morning or afternoon. When the weather’s good, the outdoor space offers sunshine and sofas to soak up everything the New Zealand summer has to offer whilst working at the same time. Beyond just good coffee, Long Shot has a fun array of drink options that can easily keep you there from dawn to dusk.
Address: 114 Ponsonby Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland 1011
5. Ozone Coffee
Location: Grey Lynn
Known For: Industrial modern vibe and top-notch cafe experience
Why I Love It: There’s no denying it, Ozone Coffee is cool. Everything about Ozone Coffe has been created with care, from the coffee source to the seating arrangement, and the super high ceilings. It has a business that makes it easy to stay put for hours without ever feeling out of place or like you are overstaying. It is also an ideal spot for taking meetings without bothering the other cafe-goers around you. The coffee is unsurprisingly delicious and the wonderfully trained staff and barristers will make sure everything about your experience is a joy. Ozone Coffee is a must-visit cafe in Auckland.
Address: 1/18 Westmoreland Street West, Grey Lynn, Auckland 1021
No matter what your business is, you’ll find these cafes to be welcoming, accommodating, and surprisingly special. This was my experience with just about everything in New Zealand. This country is so unique in its ability to make anyone feel at home. Despite being a tiny country tucked away in the corner of the world, NZ is second to none when it comes to dining and service. It might just be harder to find a cafe that’s a miss and not a hit!

Sadly, I no longer get to call Auckland my home, now I live in Tokyo, Japan! If you’re curious about my freelance life in Japan, check out my guide to the Best Tokyo Cafes for Remote Work.
