18 Gadgets for Writers to Upgrade Your Remote Writing Setup

Blog guide on the best gadgets for writers

One of the great things about being a freelance writer is that you really don’t need much to get started; as long as I have my laptop, I can write from anywhere. However, that doesn’t mean your writing setup can’t be better, more ergonomic, and just plain cooler with the addition of some writing gadgets.

Whether its gadgets for your home office or remote work bag, there’s an abundance of techy and mechanical tools designed to make your workday that little bit easier. In this post, I’m sharing my 18 favourite gadgets for writers as a full-time freelance content writer.

Gadgets for Your Home Office

1. Laptop Stand

This was the first ever gadget I invested in for working from home, and I think it should be yours too. A laptop stand lifts your screen to a more ergonomically friendly angle and makes your desk feel so much more professional. It’s a great option if you’re not ready to invest in a monitor just yet, and when paired with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse is the perfect freelance writer starter setup.

2. Dock Station

A docking station is great for a few reasons reasons. Firstly, it charges all your tech so that you never have the terrible realisation that your phone is dying right before walking out the door. Secondly, it makes your desk look a lot neater. And finally (my favourite) it keeps your phone out of your hands! My phone is my biggest writing distraction so having a dedicated place to leave it is a major anti-procrastination hack.

3. Walking Pad

If you’ve read any of my other writing productivity posts, you’ll know that I’m always raving about my Kingsmith walking pad. It was probably my best purchase of 2025 because not only does it help me get my steps in on those long desk-bound writing days, it also makes me so much more focused on the work. I don’t know the science, but my walking pad is the only thing that works on those days when I just can’t focus.

Writing Gadgets for Working On-The-Go

4. Portable Keyboard

I work from coffee shops a lot. Probably at least 50% of the time, I’d rather be writing from one of my favourite Tokyo cafes than my desk. This is where a portable keyboard really comes in handy – don’t sacrifice good posture just to get out of the house. I use my Bluetooth Apple keyboard, but there are so many options like iPad case keyboards and foldable keyboards that connect to your phone.

5. iPad or Tablet

Whilst I know there are portable monitors on the market, they’re expensive and never quite as good as I want them to be. My iPad, on the other hand, is lightweight, useful, and wirelessly connected to my phone and laptop. I use my iPad as a second screen on a daily basis, not to mention as a notebook for ideas and an e-reader for reviewing edits.

6. Phone Stand

Sometimes we want the option to write without having to lug our laptop around. It might sound strange, but this is when being able to write on your phone is a lifesaver. I place my phone on a stand, whip out my portable keyboard, and just get to typing. Trust me, it’s so much easier than typing with your thumbs.

Non-Writing Gadgets for Working On-The-Go

7. Noise Cancelling Headphones or Earbuds

Without my AirPod Pros, I don’t know if I could ever work outside of my home. As someone who is prone to distraction, having noise-cancelling earbuds is one of the most important elements to being able to zone in and access that creative flow. I cannot stress enough how essential they are to my workday and I don’t know how anyone writes in public without a pair.

8. Mobile Hotspot

Not every writing session requires access to the internet (and sometimes not having it is a blessing in disguise), however, more often than not I need to be able to connect in order to work. Whether it’s to access cloud writing software like Google Docs, conduct research, or respond to client emails, having an assured internet connection is important for freelance writers. A mobile hotspot means you never have to rely on spotty cafe WiFi again.

9. Power Bank

All your gadgets are pretty useless if your laptop or phone dies…especially if you don’t have immediate access to a plug socket and a deadline quickly encroaching. A solid power bank is a must-have for any writer so that they can get to work whenever inspiration hits, regardless of their current plug socket situation.

Remote Work Gadgets that Make Writing Easier

10. Smart LED Lights

Like most renters, I’m pretty limited in the ways I can personalise my space. Something that I can use, however, is smart LED lights. I love being able to change the colour, tone, and brightness of the lights depending on my mood and the time of day. It may seem small, but creating the perfect ambiance can have a huge impact on my writing as it makes me more likely to want to sit down and get to work.

11. Aeropress

What is it about being a writer that makes us love coffee so much? My current coffee gadget obsession is my aeropress – a coffee brewer that’s lightweight and super portable whilst also making genuinely delicious coffee. If I’m travelling, I can’t always rely on hotel or Airbnb coffee which is exactly why I love packing an aeropress in my bag.

12. Wireless Speaker

If I’m working out and about, I need my noise-cancelling headphones, however, at home I need a speaker. Music (specifically lofi) is my key to concentration and a good quality speaker fills my room with this instant focus magic.

Gadgets for Freelance Writers

13. Webcam

Taking freelancing seriously meaning investing in yourself as a professional. These days, most of your meetings are going to be video calls, and if you don’t look like a professional on the screen, the potential clients aren’t going to hire you as one. A good quality webcam makes a great first impression during client calls and in the long run will absolutely pay for itself.

14. Ring Light

If a good webcam isn’t quite in budget just yet, then getting some great lighting should be your next option. A ring light is going to improve how you look on screen regardless of the quality of your webcam, plus you can take it with you to ensure great calls from wherever you might be. Ring lights can be found in all budgets with even cheap ones making a difference!

15. Erasable To-Do List

I have at least three different to-do lists on the go at any one time. Usually I like to use my iPad for these with one major exception: daily planners. Writing out my daily to-do list in the mornings is a bit of a ritual in itself and seeing as most freelancers are working on about 1000 things at any one time, the extra organisation gadgets is always appreciated.

Gadgets that Make Great Gifts for Writers

16. E-Reader

It’s not rocket science…writers usually love to read. When we’re staring at a backlit screen all day long, an e-reader can be a great rest for the eyes. I don’t have the space for all the books I want to read and considering that I travel a lot, an e-reader is one of my most beloved writing gadgets.

17. Temperature Controlled Mug

Continuing with the coffee love, a temperature controlled mug is the perfect gift for writers. Just because I made a cup of coffee, doesn’t mean I’m going to remember to drink it immediately. These mugs keep my hot drinks hot for longer so that I’m never left sipping luke warm coffee, or worse, reheating tea in the microwave.

18. A Fancy Keyboard

Has anyone else’s social media feeds been flooded with satisfying keyboard typic videos? In all seriousness, a really nice keyboard is truly an excellent gift for writers because it’s something they might want but don’t need. These can vary in price with so many colours and styles to choose from.
