The tech industry is ever-changing and rarely boring. There are new updates all the time, and a successful freelance writer in tech needs to be able to learn, understand, and cover these changes in real time in order to keep up with the rate of tech innovation.

Social media copywriting is all about engagement. You have very few words, whether in an Instagram caption, LinkedIn post, or tweet, to capture the attention of a brand’s target audience. Interaction is everything, with instantly trackable metrics to measure your success.
You’ll need to be familiar with the platform/platforms you’re writing on with a constant stream of new ideas. Social media copywriting also requires a strong understanding of industry trends and some amount of data analysis to figure out what works and what doesn’t.

For SaaS, you need somewhat of a technical background and strong written communication skills when it comes to introducing complex solutions to potential customers.
SaaS writing can take almost every form, with the most important probably being solution description pages and pitch decks. If you’re interested in SaaS but lack a tech background, I’d recommend starting your own tech blog and spending some time becoming an expert in one particular area of the industry.

Of course, it would be helpful to have specific medical experience or qualifications however, there are other avenues into the niche. Volunteering with healthcare non-profits, for instance, is a great way to get started and build up a portfolio.

Corporate training, university tools, and employee onboarding are just some of the solutions offered within the B2B education market. This is a growing start-up niche that has seen huge success in the past few decades.

It’s not about convincing individuals to opt in but appealing to higher-level decision-makers through big-picture results. This comes in the form of case studies, email campaigns, and SEO long-form content.

For some reason, most freelance writing breakdowns overlook video script services. I got my start as a screenplay ghostwriter and quickly discovered the range of opportunities in this area. Just because the final deliverable is visual doesn’t mean that freelance writers aren’t involved!
YouTube
The YouTube script-writing niche is super broad; you can pretty much pick whatever hobby, personal interest, or area of expertise and find a related channel looking for content. These scripts typically require a lot of research and several back-and-forths with the client, but once you understand their voice and style, they can be written relatively quickly.
There are always people on Upwork looking for video scriptwriters, and although the pay is low, it’s a great way to build up your experience. Once you have a larger portfolio of successful YouTube videos, you can make the transition to working with larger creators on the platform.

Short-Form
Short-form is no longer the future of content, it is well and truly the present. 85% of internet users watch short-form content, but did you know that a lot of these short-form scripts are written by freelancers?
Script writing for short-form can often fall under the ‘social media manager’ umbrella with larger companies in particular looking to outsource the content creations to experts in the field. To succeed in this niche, you’ll need to be amazing at trend spotting, able to come up with new ideas on a daily basis, and flexible when it comes to making content.

You’ll need to conduct a lot of research, experiment with things like Google ads, and get incredibly familiar with the world of SEO. You’ll most likely be working with marketing agencies who outsource their script writing, so get ready to pitch your services to them with stats, evidence, and examples at the ready.

So, whilst not everyone is here to learn the most lucrative freelance niches, I know a lot of people are. To keep things simple, here are the areas that tend to offer the highest compensation with possible avenues into all types of freelance writing, including content, copy, and B2B.
Tech, Finance, and Healthcare
These are essentially the golden three when it comes to freelance writing niches. If you already have the experience, knowledge, or qualifications, then you can likely find a path to well-paying clients without too much stress. Alternatively, if you’re looking to retrain in the best-paid freelance niche, then I would recommend looking into one of these.
Cypto
Although a newer niche, there is no shortage of companies looking for crypto experts to join their teams of freelance writers. There is a lot of money in the crypto industry, although it does require specialist knowledge and following strict regulation guidelines.
To break into crypto writing, you might want to consider starting a personal blog to build up your knowledge and get some initial portfolio examples.
SEO
It is impossible to overlook SEO when it comes to freelance writing. It comes into play with every single niche, service, and industry, with companies always on the lookout for SEO experts to elevate their websites, blogs, and writing strategies. Building up your online presence as an SEO wizard with quantifiable results is a surefire way to earn great money as a freelance writer.
